It's that time again! When the Avast Free anti-virus expires, you will see the following message. Click Renew Now:

The next screen shows an enticing advert for Avast Internet Security, the full paid suite of protection software:

I regard this upgrade as unnecessary for these reasons:
  • The free and paid software both include the same great anti-virus. The paid software also includes other features that most home users are unlikely to use such as:
    • Firewall. Already exists in Windows.
    • Anti-Spam. All good email programs already have this feature
    • SafeZone. Exactly the same as Google Chrome, which hopefully all my recent and regular customers are already using.
    • SandBox. Included with the free version anyway.
  • The free anti-virus still outperforms many of it's commercial competitors.
So, just click Renew free basic protection only.

You will be taken to a registration form. Just fill in your email address, and choose a password. Click Continue to get free license:

Lastly, the final window shows yet another offer to try their full paid suite on a 20-day trial. To ignore this, just close the window with the normal X in the top-right corner:
